How Medical Murray Designs and Forms Catheter Tips

Catheter tips are one of the most important components of a catheter. The tip guides the catheter through the body and toward the target area. Once the design is finalized, we begin the catheter tipping process. This involves the precise manipulation of the catheter tip to achieve the desired shape and size. We use a variety of techniques to achieve this, including:

  • Thermoforming: Through the controlled application of hot air or induction heating of a tipping die, we heat the distal end of the catheter until it becomes soft and pliable. The tip is then pressed into a mold that has the desired tip shape.
  • Insert Molding: This involves molding the tip directly onto the distal end of the catheter shaft, merging the tip and shaft in one seamless process.
  • Molding and Bonding: In this dual-step approach, we mold the tip and then bond it to the shaft. 
  • Machining: Using a machine to cut or grind the catheter tip into the desired shape.

Different materials have different properties that can affect the performance of the catheter. For example, the material used for the tip may need to be softer or more flexible to reduce trauma to the patient. Alternatively, a harder material may be required to facilitate precise placement of the device.

Once the catheter tipping process is complete, we perform rigorous quality control testing to ensure the catheter meets all necessary specifications. We use a variety of testing methods, including visual inspection, dimensional measurements, and functional testing. This ensures that the catheter is safe and effective for its intended use.
